This program explores the richness and inventiveness of contemporary percussion through emblematic works from the repertoire. Emmanuel Séjourné opens the concert with Vous avez du feu? a rhythmic, incisive piece. Thierry De Mey, a major figure in gestural music, is represented by two works: the fascinating Pièce de gestes and the celebrated Musique de tables, combining precision, choreography and the musicality of the body. Painting with breath by David Downes invites us to a sensitive sonic experience of breath and texture. Casey Cangelosi’s Blink is a virtuoso piece of percussive writing. The excerpt from the first part of Drumming by Steve Reich, a master of minimalism, hypnotizes with its repetitive, evolving motifs. Finally, Mark Applebaum’s Straitjacket, with its Isopangram and Taquinoid movements, pushes back the boundaries between music, theater and performance. A sensory and visual journey through the most daring forms of percussion.
