Tribute to Beethoven… and principled inspiration for the Orford Festival

Beethoven became deaf in his early thirties, but that didn’t stop him from writing some of the most famous and masterful scores in music history. Beethoven is the theme around which the Orford Festival’s programming revolves this year, and we’ve taken advantage of this to offer a highly original, unconnected program that proposes to hear and even see percussion in a different light. After all, why not seek out the underlying principle of a work? In this era of all-electronics, we return to sound in its simplest expression, but exploring all its dimensions. With works by Mark Applebaum, Steve Reich, Emmanuel Séjourné and others, we bring percussion to life through the eye, through gesture or through fire.
