26 Jun Meeting with the polish percusionist Elwira Slazak
We had a wonderful encounter this week with Elwira Slazak, a Polish percussionist and concert artist. We first met her at Classical:NEXT in Budapest this year, and we were delighted to see her here in Quebec and learn about her quite impressive career. She studied at the Warsaw Academy of Music, the École Nationale de Musique (France), and the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels, specializing in marimba, and earned all her degrees with the highest honors. She honed her craft under world-renowned percussionists such as John Beck (USA), Frédéric Macqrez, Nicolas Martynciow, Babette Haag, and David Friedman. As a soloist in programs with chamber and symphony orchestras, she takes her talent even further by also composing for percussion and piano. In short, Elwira is a force to be reckoned with. And on top of that, she’s very, VERY nice.
This kind of international encounter is a joy, reminding us that the language of music and percussion is often the same, despite cultural differences and geographical distances. A magnificent gathering of percussionists!!
