Huizi Wang

Born in China into a family of literature professors, Huizi Wang began her piano studies at the age of 4 and continued until she was 20, when she left China to pursue her literature studies in France.

Four years later she began studying percussion at the Conservatoire national à rayonnement régional de Nice in the class of Régis Famelart. After completing a DEM (Diploma of Musical Studies) and a Bachelor’s degree in Musical Interpretation at the University of Nice-Sophia-Antipolis, Huizi Wang moved to Montreal where she completed a Master’s degree in percussion at the University of Montreal in the class of Julien Gregoire. This young performer continues her studies at the Schulich School of Music of McGill where she is a doctoral candidate under the direction of Fabrice Marandola. Her research focuses on the application of Taoism in the musical interpretation of percussion.

In France, she has had the great privilege of playing with the Monaco Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre philharmonique de Canne and the Orchestre philharmonique de Nice, as well as participating in numerous contemporary music events in the south of France and in Strasbourg. Soloist, chamber musician and orchestral musician, Huizi Wang, recently a resident of Montreal, collaborates with various creators in the musical milieu in addition to carving out a place for herself in the Quebec orchestral milieu.

In 2018, she performs a series of concerts as a soloist in José Evangelista’s La Porte. In 2020, she played in the Sixtrum Six Marimbas concert and in 2021, she participated in several concerts of the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec.

In March 2022 Huizi is the winner of the McGill Romantic/Contemporary Concerto Competition 2021-2022 in the woodwind, brass and percussion category. In 2023 she performed the same concerto, Sieidi by Kalevi Aho, with the McGIll Symphony Orchestra.

Her playing is often described as a subtle blend of zenitude and high virtuosity.
