Born in France, Charles’ passion for music was sparked by his childhood love of Brazilian Batucada. At age seven, he began formal studies at the Conservatoire Régional de Lyon under the tutelage of Raphaëlle Frey-Maibach in Afro-Cuban percussion, and with Jean-Luc Rimey-Meille, Pierre Rouyer, and AHlio Terlizzi in classical percussion.
At sixteen, Charles moved to Los Angeles to pursue studies at the Colburn School of Music with renowned orchestral percussionist Ted Atkatz. Chosen as principal percussionist of the Colburn Youth Orchestra (CYO), he had the opportunity to perform in radio-broadcasted concerts and live performances with the Colburn Academy Percussion Ensemble under the direction of Ken McGrath.
After turning eighteen, Charles relocated to Montreal to study with Fabrice Marandola and complete a Bachelor of Music in Performance at McGill University’s Schulich School of Music, graduating in June 2022.
In Summer 2021, Charles won first prize in the International Percussion Youth
Competition Belgium in the keyboard category and second prize in the snare drum category. In early 2023, he was selected as the percussionist for the newly formed Ensemble Éclat and, since Summer 2023, has become an official member of the percussion ensemble Sixturm.
In March 2024, Charles performed Mad Max and collaborated with composer Pierre Jodlowski during “La Semaine du Neuf,” a Montreal music festival organized by Le Vivier, where Jodlowski was the featured composer.
Charles completed his Master’s in Percussion Performance at McGill University in May 2024.
